“Seventy percent of the evacuation is complete,” one of the men reported to the Council.

Laurenden took the man by the shoulders. “Have all the shuttles left the Northern Bay?”

“There are still two shuttles left, Lord Commander, but the building sustained major impact from the debris. We don’t know the number of fatalities yet.”

Laurenden looked at the Elders, then at the slow sorting and packing happening behind them. He knew it was his duty to be there, but there were things that were more important to him. He had to go and find Carey, and make sure she was safe. He had to protect her.

“Laurenden, where are you going?” one of the Elders demanded, as he ran towards the Council chamber door.

“There’s somewhere I need to be,” he said.

She was his number one priority. He saw her crystal clear blue eyes again and soft, pouty lips. He couldn’t be without her.

He ran through the structured mayhem of Parathalians heading to their designated safety point. It was still chaotic. Safety Officers on yellow hovercycles helped direct them. He arrived at the Northern Shuttle Bay and inhaled sharply. The destruction was worse than he had imagined. The entire left wing had collapsed and took out two shuttle bays with it.

Where was Carey? Had she managed to escape on a shuttle already?

The Safety Officer inside was too busy directing people to the remaining two shuttles. He pressed the information panel on the wall and checked the log.

The shuttle automatically scanned everyone that came on board. The screen was flickering off and on. He saw the first page and scanned quickly through the names, then the screen blinked twice and went black. He hit it was the palm of his hand, cracking the cover.

Was she safe or not? He had to find her, and ran in the direction of the collapsed wing. A Safety Officer tried to stop him as he neared the hazy area. He pushed him out of the way.

“Carey! Carey!” he shouted into the dust and ash. He coughed as the acrid smell of the gas filled his lungs.

A female grabbed his arm and let it go suddenly, as she looked up.

“Sorry, Lord Commander!” she said looking down. Then added, “My child is in there!”

He brushed her aside and continued into the haze.

“The mistress went to get her,” she added as he disappeared.

He pushed a sheet of metal out of the way, and strained his eyes to make out anything in the hot, grey gloom.

He heard a female sobbing, and cry out “Don’t die baby, I’m going to save you.”

It was her. It was Carey’s voice.

“Carey, I’m here!” he shouted. “Where are you?”

He climbed over a broken circulation cylinder as a cloud of dust permeated the space, following a loud crunch. More of the structure must be collapsing, he thought.

“Lau- Laurenden,” she cried.

Her voice was coming from a dark corner up ahead. He ducked under a beam and saw her on her hands and knees. A reinforcement beam lay across her right leg.
